1/4 panels ready for installation!

This artwork is comprised of a variety of organic shapes made of acrylic paint, layered on top of one another, on plywood. My artwork explores not only composition and colour relationships, but also themes of nature and the landscape informed by my experiences growing up in rural areas, and now living in the very urban landscape of Toronto. The goal of this piece is to create a landscape that the viewer can exist in and explore, as well as evoke feelings of summertime and the joy that I experience while being in nature during the summertime. While creating this piece, I worked in a similar fashion to the way I work on any of my paintings, in which I allow the painting to inform it’s own composition throughout the process. My paintings morph throughout the creation process, and this one did as well. As I create, I listen to what the painting wants to be, and make it happen. This is how the colour palette for this work was created. I began with a variety of colours, and as I worked I narrowed down which colours felt that they belonged with the painting, and painted over any that I felt were not integral to the composition. In its completed form, it is made of pastel and light colours, with more saturated colours sprinkled throughout, using colours that I associate with summertime. I also considered the environment that this painting would exist in, and as it will be street-facing I aimed to create a composition that would flow with the things that exist in that environment such as passing cars or cyclists. The composition has a sense of movement as the hills bob up and down, and wiggle from side to side, mimicking the bustling movement of the street it will be situated on. I considered the variations in speed of viewer, and created a work that I intend to be visually interesting and full of life while viewing from a stand-still, or a fast moving vehicle.
